Counsellor's Role Program Components

 

The school counsellor is part of a total team responsible for the comprehensive delivery system designed to meet the needs of all students.

 

The Role and Function of the High School Counsellor  

 

The overall purpose of counselling, like teaching, is to maximize the learning potential of all students in the school system.  The high school counselling philosophy operates upon the basic assumption that adolescents who feel capable and worthwhile will gain the maximum benefit from their school experience.  The counsellor is able to provide a personalized service by taking the individual needs and circumstances of each student into account.  The counsellor also provides teachers and parents with assistance in optimizing the development of the adolescents in their care

 

The role of the counsellor  is to provide:

  • Direct counselling with students

  • Consultation with school staff and parents

  • Coordination of the efforts of school and non-school personnel

  • Coordination and/or facilitation of personal, academic and career development workshops.

 


 

Program Components

 The Erickson Collegiate Counselling Program includes:  

  • Individual and group counselling with students in areas of personal, social, academic and career development.

  • Consultation with parents, teachers, agencies and services outside the school system for purposes of obtaining information, expertise and additional resources needed to ensure the student’s well being.

  • Co-ordination of special programs or events regarded to be of developmental interest and concern to the student population such as: workshops on career awareness, introduction to Manitoba universities, colleges, and apprenticeship programs, school course planning, post-secondary information days, as well as personal and social issues such as substance abuse, dating relationships, body images, sexuality etc.

  • Service to both students and parents in the areas of planning and scheduling of students high school programs of study as well as exploration and planning of post secondary educational and career opportunities.
