Programming offered through the building Student Success with Aboriginal Parents Program enhances educational success for our students at Erickson Collegiate by:

bulletGives the students the chance to learn about their identity as First Nation peoples by learning about their culture from Elders and community members
bulletAssists the students develop and grow their self-esteem when projects are planned, developed and completed
bulletBuilds bridges between our children and the elders and community members through participation and support
bulletHelps students achieve their goal to be successful in the school with the knowledge that the community is in support of the efforts to do well in school.

Strategy

Presently we have community members and parents who are invited to come to the school to teach and share their traditional knowledge with the youth.  We have many volunteers who have come to participate in such activities as drum making, star blankets, beading, regalia making, drumming, singing and dancing.  Other programs being offered are mural development, astronomy and rocketry.

Students, who have responded positively and show pride in learning and sharing their culture, choose which activity they would like to be involved with.  Teachers in the areas of Art, English, Math, Music, History and Geography have incorporated student cultural projects into the curriculum.
