Language Arts

The English Language Arts program will consist of many components, including independent and group novel studies, and various thematic units which will incorporate reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing/representing.    For Spelling, we will use the Steck Vaughn Grade Five and Grade Six textbooks. Students will practice 20 words each week. The speaking portion of the curriculum will be covered by TUSC (Totally Unique Speaking Club), Reader's Theatre, choral reading, and various other oral presentations. 

Evaluation:

Listening/Speaking…………………10%

        *Listens effectively, follows directions, and expresses him/herself clearly.

Viewing/Representing…………….10%

        *Understands and interprets visual skills.  Manages ideas and information.

Spelling……………………………….....20%

        *Monday: Pretest and work on lesson,    Friday: Test and complete lesson

Reading………………………………......30%

        *Reads with fluency and expression.  Reads with comprehension.

Writing…………………………………......30%

        *Writing is organized and focused.  Writes legibly and applies revision and editing    skills.  Uses correct grammar and spelling.
