GRADE 11 WORK EXPERIENCE- MARCH 24 TO MARCH 28
As part of the school division's commitment to our Career Development Program, our grade 11 students will be participating in the work experience component of the program. During the 2007/2008 school year our grade 11 students will be completing this 5 day work placement component from Monday, March 24th to Friday, March 28th.
A form for the students and parents to fill out and discuss will be sent home either through the internet or paper mail. This form allows me to assess the student's interests and skills and match it to potential work placements that will best serve their needs. Please take the time to discuss these forms and choices to be made on these forms and hand them in on or before the date posted on those sheets. Setting up these work placement can be very time consuming, so ample time is needed for this part of the process, so do not be surprised by an early due date on these sheets.
Students may also arrange for their own placement by finding a suitable work place in a field of interest. However there are exceptions to this; students are NOT to contact or make personal placements with any Regional Health Authorities, R.C.M.P./ City Police, Fire Departments, Personal Care Homes, and Provincial Organizations. These requests must come to me as I have specific guidelines, contact persons, and request forms to fill out. Students must also fill out forms, once approved for these above mentioned locations.
After placement has been found, students are encouraged to send their employer a cover letter, letter of introduction and a resume prior to their work experience. Students are also encouraged to take full advantage of this unique learning opportunity by taking some time and interviewing their employer, and to be inquisitive. If the students are needing assistance with their cover letters and resumes they can come and see me in my office ahead of time, and I will gladly provide assistance and guide them through this process.
During the course of the work placement week, the participating students will be required to keep a journal (which I will provide). This will allow space for a personal reflection and will aid in a more beneficial, learning opportunity. Students will also be required to fill out a questionnaire and a daily journal, the employer will also fill out an evaluation on the student (evaluation sheets are part of the journal package I will hand out). These evaluations will be part of the mark which they will receive, these marks will be used as part of their final mark in Grade 12, and will also go towards receiving the Career Preparation credit.
All of our students are covered with Worker's Compensation under Manitoba Education, Citizen and Youth. However, students who choose to do their work experience outside of Manitoba will not be covered through Worker's Compensation. It is strongly recommended that you provide any coverage that may be required or associated with placement out of province. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work and any other costs associated and/or incurred during their placement whether this may be in or out of province.
