Project Details
Classrooms will study Canadian regions (provinces/territories) through an exchange of binders which
 includes cross-curricular information and activities.

A) Objectives for Student Learning: - To exchange and study information about the different regions of
 Canada such as natural resources, climate, population, physical features and industries. - To allow
 students to appreciate Canada's cultural and social diversity. - To recruit 7 other grade 5 teachers in
 our division to co-ordinate their own "Binding Canadian Regions" project by the fall of 2001. B)
 Curriculum Outcomes: ELA -poetry, story writing. Science - weather graphs. ICT -e-mailing,
 accessing Internet sites and resources, scanner and graphics.
B)  The binder itself will consistof 3 main components-
PART ONE
a.  a title page
b.  a photo of the school
c.  a photo of the class
d.  a write-up of each student with a small picture
e.  a write-up of the participating teacher
f.  pictures from around the province/community, such as photos, postcards, hand drawn pictures, magazine cut-outs etc. with a brief write-up for each student in the class to do ( resources, provincial symbols, points of interest etc.)
g.  completed survey sheets
These items should be placed in a sturdy binder using plastic page protectors.  Often participating schools will display the binder not only to their own classes, but other classes in the school as well.  The binder and pages will be handled often.
PART TWO
a.  The bulletin board display should fit easily into the shipping box.  It is strongly recommended that the contents be laminated where possible.
b.  Title of your province in cut-out, easy to read letters
c.  A map of your province with the home community highlighted
d.  Any interesting postcards, pictures, flag that would be suitable for a display
PART THREE
The survey is to be included in the back of the binder.  Please include the questions with the answers.
a.  What are the distinct geographical features of your province - lakes, rivers, mountains etc.?
b.  Name and describe briefly the plants and animals native to your province.
c.  Provincial emblems - flag, bird, tree, flower
e.  Describe briefly the climate in each of the 4 seasons
f.  Populations- Where do most of the people in your province live?  Name some of the larger centres.
g.  Who (past and present) are famous people from your province?  What is their claim to fame?
h.  What are your major resources/industries?
i.  What ethnic groups make up the population?
j.  Briefly describe the features of your own city/town - tourist attractions, industries, populations and physical features.
k.  Tell us what is great about your province!  Convince us to come for a visit!
