Independent Study Courses

Students must recognize that to be successful in passing an Independent Study course they must be able to self-initiate their work pattern such that the course will be completed. Normally a student is not permitted to take more than one Independent Study course at a time.

The administration will approve a student request for an Independent Study course for these reasons:

1. It is a required course and there is a timetable conflict.
2. The course is not offered by the school.
3. The course is for extra credit or it is an interest course.
4. The student cannot attend regular classes due to illness.
5. The student wishes to obtain their required credits in less than four years.

The administration will counsel the student regarding the request, and if necessary, involve the parents in the decision if the principal believes that:

  • the student’s request is valid
  • the student’s intent to pursue Independent Study is not serious
  • the student does not have a reasonable prospect of passing
  • the student’s past record in Independent Study is questionable

Students in Grade 9 - 12 are eligible for Independent Study provided the following conditions are satisfied and approved by the administration:

Course Changes

If a student needs to make a course change, the subject teachers and parents/guardians should be consulted before a decision is made. This change can only be made by the guidance counselor and/or and administrator. Courses may only be changed for appropriate education reasons. Parent/guardian consent may be required. The proper form should be obtained from the guidance counselor and the required signatures obtained.
