Language Arts
At our school, we continue to put a great deal of emphasis on our language arts program in that it is the basis for everything else that we do. We are following, very closely, the Department of Education curriculum that stresses meaningful student reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing. We are teaching spelling, grammar, and phonics but are making these skills more meaningful for the children by teaching them more “on the job” as opposed to teaching them in isolation. The approach may vary according to individual needs and learning styles.
Parents play an important role in this area by encouraging their children to read for enjoyment. Also, listening to your child read and discussing what has been read are activities that will help your child become a more capable and willing reader and student.
Our teachers attempt to expose the children to good literature in a variety of different ways. The children are encouraged to do a great deal of actual reading and writing. This practical approach to the application of Language Arts is producing more willing and able readers, writers, listeners, and speakers. |
