Code of Conduct

Rapid City School Code of Conduct and Expectations

1)        Everyone must behave in a respectful manner and comply with the code of conduct.
2)        Bullying or abusing any person physically, sexually or psychologically – orally, in writing, or otherwise – is unacceptable.
3)        Discriminating unreasonably on the basis of any characteristic set out in subsection 9(2) of The Human Rights Code is unacceptable.
4)        Using, possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs at school is unacceptable.
5)        Gang involvement will not be tolerated on school sites as per provincial legislation.
6)        Possessing a weapon, as “weapon” is defined in section 2 of the Criminal Code (Canada), will not be tolerated on schools sites.
7)        Staff and students must adhere to school policies respecting appropriate use of electronic mail and the Internet, including the prohibition of            material that the school has determined to be objectionable.
8)        Disciplinary Consequences of Violating the Code of Conduct and Expectations
Rapid City School believes that consequences must vary depending on the situation, age of the child and cognitive abilities of the                       individuals involved.  We feel that treating each child fairly does not mean treating everyone the same.  We are implementing a restitution             program that allows the children to make mistakes but also allows them to grow through their mistakes, not necessarily suffer through                       them.  Basically it means that rather than matching a punishment to an action we will be trying to respond in a way that changes or                       eliminates the behavior causing the problem.  This will hopefully allow people to learn to self-correct their mistakes.
This does not mean there are no bottom lines, as they still exist.  Anyone who engages in conduct including violence, weapons, drugs,                       direct defiance an adult or if it becomes a matter of “we can’t teach because… “ then there will be consequences such as detention,                       suspension, or a combination of those and something else followed by restitution.
9)         Process for Appealing Disciplinary Decisions
             Divisional policy states;
Concerns may arise regarding School Division personnel, programs, activities and/or operations. The Board expects that complaints and              concerns will be dealt with at the lowest level of authority and directly with the individuals involved.  Most of these situations will be                        addressed satisfactorily through informal discussion between the person(s) with the concern and the employee(s) with responsibility in the              situation.
The Board supports the process reflected in the Regulation for dealing with unresolved concerns or for more serious matters that would be              characterized as a complaint. An individual or group raising a concern or complaint will be advised of the appropriate process.
All parties have an interest in ensuring that a fair and expeditious process is in place to deal with complaints. The purpose of this process              is to find a satisfactory resolution to the complaint(s) raised.

           Important considerations include:

  • addressing the complaint(s) raised as early as possible,
  • ensuring confidential treatment of the complaint(s) and using a process that is recognized as fair and equitable by all parties.

Note:  Please be aware that it is against provincial legislation for any Manitoba student to wear or display any gang colors, signs, or                       paraphernalia.  This has never been an issue here but all provincial students must be aware of it. The information regarding the use of                       alcohol or drugs has been added to conform with provincial guidelines as well.
