Technology
The Team: The Tanner’s Crossing School Technology Team consists of a team of school personal along with support from the division office staff. The team has representation from all grade level groups.
Rationale: At Tanner’s Crossing School we believe that technology should be integrated into the regular school subjects. This implies that wherever possible the outcomes for technology should be integrated with the outcomes of the other subjects. This plan is in line with the goals outlined by the division as well as those outlined by the Department of Education. We believe that various forms of technology should be made available to the staff and students on a regular basis both as a teaching tool and a tool for learning. It is our belief that technology is only one of many tools that we use in our teaching and learning environment.
Hardware: We have two labs, each lab consisting of thirty computers that are all networked and hooked up to a laser printer. Lab one also has a scanner and each lab has a large screen television. The library consists of seven computers hooked up the network, two computers with cd roms and a laser printer. Each class also has at least two computers and a printer in it for use on a daily basis. At the office for sign out purposes we have two video cameras, and a lap top computer and a v.c.r. hooked to a presenter, a digital and 35 mm camera, and three t.v. and v.c.r’s. The French department has a digital camera and there are two t.v.’s and v.c.r’s upstairs. The office consists of four computers all hooked to the network, a laser printer and a scanner. There are two computers in the resource area used for the success maker program and there are four other computers in the resource area used for a variety of programs with our special needs students. Each of the teachers from 6-8, as well as all the resource team members, has a computer on their desk with the plan to put one on the desk of all staff.
Implementation: Our school will follow the skills continuum outlined by the division. A copy of this continuum is attached to this plan (form a). It should be noted that this is a minimum guide and that teachers are encouraged to go above these outcomes if so desired. At the K-6 level the responsibility of meeting the said outcomes lies with the homeroom teacher. At the grade seven and eight level the responsibility of meeting the outcomes will be divided up amongst the teachers at this level as outlined in the attachment (form b). The timetable will be set up so that each class in grade k-2 will have one or two periods per cycle in a lab. The classes from grades 3-8 will use a block timetable and will be divided into three groups. Group A will be the grades seven and eight class, group B will be grades five and six, and group C will be grades three and four. Each group will be block booked into the lab for forty minutes a day for six days in a row and will then be off for twelve days. This will allow classes to plan their units accordingly so that they have a block of time to use the lab and complete a project. This also allows for many open times, which can be booked when a class is on their time off.
Software: The plan is to outline the software that we currently have and evaluate what is working and what is not. We also plan to find software for the outcomes that we do not currently have software for. We have started with a list of programs that are used for Computer Guided Instruction.
P.D. Opportunities: There is a constant need for better P.D. opportunities in the area of technology. The committee is in the process of finding out where these needs are and looking at ways to meet them.
