Student Support

Tanner’s Crossing School has an in depth student services department including resource, guidance and student support coordinator. Students who need help with their academic performance are referred to one of two resource teachers. Students in kindergarten to grade three are referred to Mrs. Kathy Stone. Students in grade four to eight are referred to Mrs. Lisa Letain. Extra assistance varies from one on one to group work and Success Maker. Students may also be referred to the Guidance Councillor, Mrs. Kim Burgess should they need assistance in their social, emotional, behavioural, or intellectual development. Mrs. Sue Ross is our Student Support Coordinator and helps those students in grade seven and eight who need extra help in keeping organized, completing assignments, and preparing for tests. For more information about any of our student services, contact the school.

Peer Tutoring Program

The counsellor along with the Student Support Facilitator matches high school peer tutors with students from TCS. These students offer assistance with study skills and one-to-one instruction and review. They also oversee a study group for grade 6 - 8 students one lunch hour per cycle. (currently on Day 6)

Peer Tutors work in close co-operation with the Guidance Counsellor and Student Support Facilitator who provide initial training and on-going support.

Tutorials can take place before or after school, at lunch hour or during a common spare. Most tutorial groups meet twice a week but this may vary depending on the needs of the tutee.

Students may request tutorial help for short term or long term contact. Students who have been absent for an extended period of time due to illness or a planned trip can request a tutor to assist them in catching up with the class. Some tutors are also willing to consider additional home tutoring for a reasonable fee.

Research has shown that having peers reinforce what has been taught results in greater understanding of content.
