The Student Support Services Department in Rolling River School Division provides supports to students in 3 steps:
1.
Identifying Students in Need of Support
- Referral (Self, Parent, Teacher)
- Screening Programs (Early Years Evaluation - TA & DA, Early Development Instrument-Kindergarten, Vision and Hearing Screening-K to 12).
- URIS (Unified Referral and Intake System = Health Care needs) Application process.
- School-based Student Services Teams (SSTs) that include: School Administration, Resource teachers, Guidance Counsellors and others as needed.
2.
Building an Individual Student Profile
- Assessments, short-term interventions and programming recommendations provided by school-based staff (Classroom teachers, Resource teachers and Guidance counsellors).
- If needed, assessments and programming recommendations by division-based specialists: Speech/Language Clinician, Social Worker, Psychologist.

Developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
- Based on the Student Profile, the school team (including students, as appropriate, and parents) develops a plan to support the student to be successful in the most inclusive environment possible. This may include: adaptations, modifications, individualized programming on a short-term basis, or work replacements.
- Regular meetings of the team (including students, as appropriate, and parents) to review the plan, making adjustments as needed.
THE FOLLOWING DIVISION-BASED SPECIALIST SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE AT ALL SCHOOLS BY REFERRAL
Speech and Language Clinician:
The Speech and Language Clinician works with students who require support in the development of language and communication skills by conducting assessments and working closely with Resource Teachers to develop and monitor programming for referred students. Programming is delivered by Educational Assistants under the supervision of the Speech and Language Clinician and the Resource Teacher. The Speech and Language Clinician also provides regular training and modelling for the Educational Assistants, consults with students, staff and parents and provides training for teachers in the area of language acquisition and augmented, alternative communication.
Social Worker:
The Social Worker supports students and families to resolve personal, emotional, and social issues that may interfere with student's learning and overall functioning.
Individual and group counselling are available through a referral process. As well, support to navigate school, home, and outside agencies is provided. The Social Worker assists in developing Individual Education Plan (IEP), and provides support to Crisis Intervention & Threat Assessment teams.
Psychological Services:
The psychologist services of student learning needs are available for assessment and programming.
The psychologist, using a variety of tools and strategies, assesses student learning needs and provides programming recommendations to the school team for inclusion in Individual Education Plans.
Referrals to the psychologist are made through the Resource Teacher, Principal, and Student Service Coordinator with parental consent.
SCHOOL-BASED SUPPORTS:
Resource Teachers:
Resource Teachers work with parents and staff to coordinate specialized services, develop Individual Education Plans (IEP), program accommodations, and ongoing team meetings as required. He/she provides direct and indirect services to students who require extra support in their school program.
Guidance Counsellors:
Guidance Counsellors provide direct and indirect educational counselling services to students in the areas of personal, academic, and career development. They may work with individual, small groups or classrooms of students. They work actively with community based services and help classroom teachers to develop and implement of Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Educational Assistants:
Educational Assistants work directly with special needs students under the guidance and supervision of Classroom, Resource Teachers and Principals. Their tasks range from providing for health care, physical needs, emotional support to reinforcing language and other academic concepts. Educational assistants keep daily logs and provide regular feedback to classroom teachers.
Student Support Facilitators:
(Grades 7-12)
The Student Support Facilitators mentor students and support them academically, emotionally and socially. Student contact is made on a one-to-one basis and in groups. Student Support Facilitators focus on relating academics to real-life, preparation for tests and exams, and building self-esteem in students.
